Over the last few decades, the global church has undergone a monumental shift, with its epicenter moving from the Global North to the Global South. Shrinking numbers, decline in biblical literacy and theological liberalism have negatively impacted Christianity in the Global North. Meanwhile, Africa is emerging as a center of Christian growth, mission, and theological influence. It is projected that by 2050, Africa will hold nearly 36% of the world’s Christian population. This demographic shift has also presented greater opportunity for influence, as African Christian leaders and theologians are increasingly shaping global Christian thought and practice.
This moment presents Africa with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to contribute decisively to the growth of Christianity and the preservation of Christian orthodoxy worldwide.
Over the last 41 years, AIU (earlier on as NEGST), has carved a niche for itself as a premier evangelical school of theology in Africa. It has produced hundreds of graduates from all over Africa and the rest of the world who continue to play a leading role in theological scholarship and other areas.
To meet the current needs of the church globally, AIU is committed to retaining her leadership in theological education by enhancing its reach and quality. The university has rolled out a plan to train and graduate several PhDs in the next 4 years, in different fields of theology, who would then be useful in meeting the huge training needs for the church in Africa and globally.
AIU is, therefore, offering a doctoral scholarship opportunity to top scholars from around the Continent who share this vision for global impact.
Recipients of the AIU Global Impact Scholarship in each area of specialization are expected to study as a cohort, in a full-time study schedule that will run for 3–4 years. This means that this commitment will be incompatible with full-time employment elsewhere. Since the delivery mode is largely face-to-face, students will be expected to reside in Kenya, in proximity to the university. Awardees will be expected to sign a commitment to be part of the cohort for the duration of their studies.
The AIU Global Impact PhD Scholarship may provide full or partial financial support, depending on the award offered. Applicants are encouraged to understand the scholarship conditions and the costs they may be required to meet before applying.
The scholarship application form states that applicants are responsible for educational costs not covered by the scholarship. A non-refundable application fee of KES 2,500 is also required, with proof of payment attached to the application.
Applicants must meet the applicable academic and admission requirements for their chosen doctoral program.
Additional program-specific requirements may apply. Refer to the official application form for the complete requirements and checklist.
The specific benefits and conditions of each award will be communicated by AIU after reviewing the applications. Applicants should confirm the following from their offer letter before accepting a scholarship:
Receiving a scholarship does not necessarily mean that all costs associated with doctoral study will be covered.
Applicants must review the terms of their individual award and plan for any expenses not included in the funding package.
