AIU celebrates the International Day of Commemoration

Students and staff from Africa International University joined the international community at the United Nations Offices in Nairobi (UNON) on Friday January 27th, 2023, to celebrate the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the holocaust. This annual event is observed by the United Nations to remember and honour the victims of the Holocaust and equally raise awareness about the dangers of antisemitism, prejudice, and hate.

The event, which was organized in partnership with the Israeli Embassy in Kenya, brought together many diplomats including the Israel Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Lotem, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, Director General for Foreign Affairs in Kenya, George Orina, DG-Bilateral & Political Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kenya, Mr. Nasser Ega-Musa, Director, UNIC Nairobi, & Mrs. Zainab Hawa Bangura – Director General of the UNON as well as students from different universities in Kenya. During the event, six candles were lit to signify the 6 million Jews that perished during World War II.

In the second phase of the event, diplomats from the Israel Embassy held an interactive engagement session with the students present and gave responses to the questions and concerns raised in relation to the Holocaust. The diplomats emphasized the need to remember the past in order to build a better future and called for continued action to combat antisemitism and all forms of hate and intolerance.
