Purpose and Philosophy of the Certificate in Theology: The purpose of the Certificate in Theology is to provide the basic knowledge and skills necessary for faithful ministry in a local church context, which will then have an impact on society as well. The entire curriculum is grounded in the centrality of the Bible, the importance of sound theology, and their appropriate application in the African context. The assumption is that most students are involved in local church ministry (e.g., pastors, teachers, evangelists, missionaries) or are preparing to do so.

Rationale for the Certificate in Theology: The church in Africa continues to grow rapidly, with many untrained pastors leading these churches. If the pastors of these churches hope to be effective, there is need to train them so that the church in Africa would become mature and grounded in the faith. This program is intended to address this critical need for the church so that people will have mature and qualified shepherds to lead them. There is a great market and demand for this program, especially in light of increasing government requirements for pastors to possess a formal accredited degree in theology. Many of these pastors only qualify to study at the Certificate level.

  • Why Choose This Program?
  • By the end of the Certificate in Theology program a student will be able to:
  • Accurately explain and preach the Gospel
  • Discern between true and false doctrine and teach the former
  • Preach sermons that are firmly rooted in the biblical text
  • Promote and implement biblical practices in the operation of the local church
  • Faithfully interpret Scripture and apply it to the African church and society in relevant ways
  • Counsel, disciple, and shepherd God’s people to grow in the likeness of Christ
