AIU and Maven Limited Collaboration

Advancing sustainable water management, climate action and community impact.

“

On 29 September 2026, Africa International University (AIU) and Maven Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on sustainable and practical solutions for greywater and faecal-waste management at AIU facilities.

The partnership brings together academic leadership, innovation and technical expertise to strengthen sustainability at AIU and generate lessons with wider value for society.

A partnership built around practical sustainability

The collaboration focuses on reviewing, assessing and recommending sustainable approaches to greywater and faecal-waste management across AIU facilities and premises. It is intended to strengthen wastewater treatment, reduce freshwater demand through safe water reuse, improve resource efficiency and identify opportunities for resource recovery.

The Biogreen Wastewater Treatment System

A modular solution combining biological treatment, mechanical filtration and natural sterilisation to remove organic matter, suspended solids and harmful microorganisms.

Designed to produce treated water suitable for appropriate reuse while reducing dependence on harmful chemicals and energy-intensive processes.

Shared value

FOR AIU

A stronger platform for campus sustainability, applied research, student learning, climate-policy implementation and demonstration of practical WASH solutions.

FOR MAVEN LIMITED

An institutional setting for technical assessment, knowledge exchange, evidence generation and demonstration of sustainable wastewater solutions.

FOR COMMUNITIES

Potential lessons, knowledge and scalable practices that can support better sanitation, water reuse, resource efficiency and climate resilience beyond the campus.

Implications for Africa International University

This collaboration provides a pathway for translating AIU’s sustainability commitments into visible institutional practice. It supports the University’s ambition to become a demonstration campus for sustainable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) management and contributes to implementation of the AIU Climate Policy Framework and broader sustainability agenda.

It also creates opportunities for applied research, student learning, innovation and interdisciplinary engagement around real environmental challenges.

In addition, it supports AIU’s journey towards mainstreaming IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 sustainability and climate-related reporting, including attention to Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse-gas emissions.

The collaboration further reflects AIU’s faith-based commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible resource management and care for creation.

Implications for Maven Limited

The partnership provides a practical institutional environment in which Maven Limited’s wastewater-management expertise can be assessed and applied.

Working with a university creates opportunities for technical learning, evidence generation and engagement with researchers, students and practitioners.

It also offers a platform for demonstrating how sustainable wastewater technologies can help institutions reduce pressure on freshwater resources and improve environmental performance.

Potential impact on the community

The value extends beyond the AIU campus

Water scarcity, sanitation challenges, wastewater management and climate vulnerability affect many communities in Kenya and across Africa. By testing and documenting practical solutions in an institutional setting, AIU and Maven Limited can contribute knowledge that may inform wider uptake of sustainable WASH practices and responsible resource management.

  • Improved understanding of safe water reuse and sustainable wastewater management.
  • Reduced pressure on freshwater resources through responsible reuse and efficiency.
  • Practical learning opportunities for students, staff, practitioners and community partners.
  • Knowledge that can support climate resilience, sanitation improvement and circular resource use.
  • A stronger bridge between university research, industry innovation and community needs.

A model for partnership and sustainable impact

The AIU–Maven Limited collaboration demonstrates the value of bringing together academic knowledge, institutional leadership and industry expertise to respond to practical environmental challenges. For AIU, it strengthens the connection between research, innovation, climate action and community engagement. For Maven Limited, it creates a platform for technical application and learning. For communities, the long-term opportunity lies in practical solutions and knowledge that can support healthier environments, responsible resource use and greater climate resilience.
