Celebrating 40 Years of Africa International University (AIU) & 100 Years of Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS)!

This anniversary is more than a milestone—it’s a profound reflection on the legacy, growth, and shared mission of Africa International University (AIU) and Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS). Over the past century, DTS has left an indelible mark on theological education globally, while AIU has spent four impactful decades shaping the African theological landscape. Together, these institutions have empowered countless leaders, fostering a vision of Christ-centered transformation in communities around the world.

Day 1: A Legacy of Leadership & Theological Impact

Our celebration began with inspiring reflections from esteemed leaders:

  • Prof. John Jusu, AIU faculty and Regional Director for Africa, Overseas Council International, honored Prof. Victor Cole’s foundational role in shaping AIU. Prof. Cole’s dedication to a Christ-centered theological framework continues to equip African church leaders, theologians, and believers for effective ministry.
  • Prof. James Nkansah, Dean of AIU’s Graduate School, highlighted Dr. Tokunboh Adeyemo’s monumental contributions to African Christianity. Notably, Dr. Adeyemo led the creation of the Africa Bible Commentary, an unprecedented all-African biblical commentary that offers insights from an African perspective, empowering believers across the continent.
  • Mrs. Priscilla Mwangi, Executive Director of the Centre for Biblical Transformation Africa, emphasized the critical role both AIU and DTS play in youth ministry today. Her insights resonated deeply with the audience, reminding us of the ongoing mission to empower the next generation of believers and leaders.

Day 2: Reflections, Legacy, and a Vision for the Future

Our Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nelson Makanda, opened the 2 days event  with a warm welcome to our distinguished guests, including Chancellor Master Rev. Matla Ope, who offered insights into AIU’s history and the enduring legacy of Dr. Byang Kato. A leader in African evangelical theology, Dr. Kato:

  • Established a distinctly African evangelical theology, centered on the authority of Scripture.
  • Founded the Association of Evangelicals of Africa (AEA), uniting evangelicals across the continent.
  • Advocated for an African theological identity rooted in biblical principles, creating the foundation that would later lead to AIU.

Our speakers brought fresh perspectives to the evolving nature of theological education and the vital role of partnership:

  • Dr. Michael Ortiz highlighted a shift toward partnership and mutuality in global theological education, moving beyond one-sided support to collaborative, reciprocal relationships that address unique regional challenges.
  • Mr. Voltaire Cacal, Senior Director at DTS, discussed intercultural leadership, emphasizing the importance of leaders adept at navigating Africa’s cultural diversity. His message underscored the need for culturally sensitive leadership to drive inclusive growth.
  • Prof. Josephine Mutuku Sesi spoke on contextualized worship, advocating for African cultural elements—such as indigenous music, dance, and storytelling—in worship, making faith practices resonate deeply with local communities.
  • Dr. David Tarus, Executive Director of ACTEA, addressed the future of evangelical theological education, emphasizing partnership as essential to impactful ministry. Such collaborations allow theological institutions to support one another while honoring each other’s strengths and unique contributions.

Honoring Our Heritage, Looking to the Future

The journey that began with Dr. Byang Kato continues through the vibrant legacy of AIU and DTS. AIU’s impact is embodied in the lives of alumni like Dr. Bonface Odoyo, founder of Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM), and Prof. James Nkasah, who shared how AIU’s training shaped their lives and ministries.

The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, led by our Vice-chancellor Nelson Makanda PhD, our Chancellor Master Rev. Matlaope, and Dr. Ortiz, Vice President of DTS. In true celebratory spirit, guests enjoyed a delightful dinner, marking a memorable close to an incredible two days of reflection and fellowship.
